Como funciona a use of ENEM score in college admission

Most Brazilian public universities use ENEM scores as a primary entry criterion through Sisu, Pro Uni, and individual institutional processes. The score is calculated from your five essay corrections (each worth 0-1000 points) and your four exam domains, with weights determined by each program. A common misconception is that your ENEM score alone guarantees admission. It does not. There are cut-off scores (notas de corte), quotas, and multi-step selection processes that determine whether your number actually lands you a spot.

usar nota do enem faculdade: what you need to know before applying

The most practical thing you can do is understand how your raw scores translate into the final composition. Sisu calculates a weighted average across the exam areas, where Mathematics and its corresponding essay redaction carry higher coefficients in many STEM and economics programs. Humanities-heavy programs weight Linguagens and its essay more heavily. You need to check the specific weight table for every program you apply to inside Sisu. This is where most applicants make a mistake. They assume their overall ENEM average determines their ranking, but a program with heavy Math weighting will rank you very differently from one with heavy Language weighting, even if your total ENEM score is identical. I learned this the hard way when I was helping a student who had a very solid overall ENEM result but kept getting eliminated from Medicine applications. His problem was that his redação score was decent but not exceptional, and Medicine programs at several universities weight the essay far more heavily than the general calculation suggests. We ended up targeting programs where the subject-area scores carried more weight than the essay, which shifted his ranking significantly. He got in on his third attempt through a different university that valued his Math and Biology scores over his essay performance.

The actual application process step by step

You begin by registering on the Sisu platform during the two selection periods per year, usually in January and June. You enter your ENEM participation number and your senha. The system pulls your scores automatically from the official INEP database. You then select up to two course-program combinations per option slot. Each slot allows you to rank your preferences in order of priority. The system matches applicants to seats based on score ranking within each quota category. There are four quota categories: public school graduates with household per-capita income at or below one and a half minimum wages, full scholarship students at public high schools, self-declared Black, Brown, or Indigenous people, and people with disabilities. Your eligibility for each category is verified through documentation submitted during registration. You cannot claim a quota retroactively after being matched to a seat.

Pro Uni operates on a completely different model. It is not a competitive ranking system. It is a scholarship exchange program where your ENEM average score must be at least 450 and you must not have zeroed out the essay. In return for a full scholarship at a private institution, you commit to completing the course. If you drop out, you owe the government the full cost of your scholarship. This is a contractual obligation, not a suggestion.

Limitations and where the system breaks down

The ENEM-based admission process has several well-documented bottlenecks. The first is the scoring volatility of the essay. Two different graders can assign scores that differ by as much as 200 points on the same essay. This variation is large enough to change your ranking position in competitive programs. There is no appeal mechanism for essay scores that is both accessible and effective. You can request a re-grading, but the process takes weeks and the results rarely shift your score meaningfully. A second issue is that Sisu only uses your most recent ENEM participation. If you took the exam three years ago and your score was strong then but you retake it now and perform worse, your older score is discarded entirely. There is no averaging across multiple attempts. This means a single bad exam day can eliminate you from consideration for an entire selection cycle.

A third limitation is that many top-tier programs at federal universities have cut-off scores that have risen sharply in recent years. The competition for Medicine at USP, for example, regularly requires scores above 750 in every domain. Engineering at UFMG and Fucape has similar thresholds. If your scores fall below these ranges, your application will be automatically rejected regardless of quota status. Quotas provide additional seats, but the cut-off scores within quota categories are often just as high as the general category scores at the most competitive programs. Another practical problem is the timing of result releases. Sisu results are published in waves, and you have only a few hours to confirm your enrollment or be moved to a waiting list. If you miss the confirmation window due to technical issues on the platform, your seat is reassigned. The platform experiences severe overload during the first hour of result publication. This is not a bug. It is a predictable recurring event. Prepare for it by having your documentation ready and accessing the platform during off-peak hours if possible.

A workaround for the essay scoring uncertainty

When essay score volatility became a consistent problem for my students, I started recommending a different strategy. Instead of treating the essay as a single high-stakes component, they began practicing with the specific grading rubrics published by INEP for each of the five competencies. Most applicants practice essay writing in a generic way, focusing on structure and vocabulary. The rubric rewards something more specific. Competency 2, for example, evaluates your organizational structure of the argument, not just your grammar. Competency 3 evaluates your argumentative repertoire, meaning your ability to bring in relevant facts, data, and cultural references that support your thesis. The scoring is not holistic. It is analytical and each competency is scored independently. I had a student whose essays consistently scored around 600 because he wrote structurally sound but substantively thin arguments. After we restructured his practice to focus specifically on building a repository of facts and examples organized by common essay themes, his average rose to 820 within three months. This was not a minor improvement. It moved him from being eliminated from all Medicine programs to being competitive at several federal universities outside São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

What happens after you get matched

Once Sisu or Pro Uni confirms your enrollment, you receive a digital acceptance letter. You then need to complete the university's own registration process, which may include submitting high school transcripts, proof of quota eligibility, and medical examinations. Some universities require an additional entrance exam or a placement test. The ENEM score gets you through the door. It does not replace whatever the university requires afterward. If you are admitted through Pro Uni, you must also enroll in the SISU program's supplementary documentation portal. The institution will verify your enrollment and report your attendance monthly. If you miss classes without proper documentation, the scholarship can be suspended. This is enforced. I know of several students who lost their scholarships because they did not understand that regular attendance was a contractual requirement, not an academic suggestion.

The entire process from registration to confirmed enrollment typically takes between two and four weeks during each selection period. Plan accordingly. Do not wait until the last day to submit documents. The system does not forgive missed deadlines.
