Writing poetry about family isn't as simple as it sounds
Most people think a poema sobre a familia is just listing things like love, support, and holidays. It never works that way. The ones that actually stick are the ones that show the friction, the awkward silences at dinner, the way someone passes a plate without looking at you. I've read hundreds of these and they all sound the same because writers are afraid to be honest.
Examples of actual poema sobre a familia work
Here is one I wrote after my grandmother's funeral. Not because I wanted to, but because I needed to process it.
The point here is specificity. Don't write about family in general. Write about the chipped plate, the repeated joke, the way someone sat at the table. Those details do more work than any metaphor about roots or trees or anchors. I tried that approach once and the result was generic garbage that nobody would remember. Switching to concrete objects made it land.

Common mistakes people make
Starting with grand declarations. Never begin with something like "a família é tudo" or "o amor familiar é eterno." That tells the reader nothing. Show me the scene instead. Let me see your uncle pouring too much wine, or your mother folding laundry while watching TV, or the text thread where nobody replies to anyone for three weeks and then someone sends a meme and everything feels normal again. Another mistake is making it all positive. Family is complicated. There is love and there is distance, sometimes in the same conversation. The best poems I've encountered allow both to exist without resolving them.
How to approach writing one
Pick a single moment. Not a lifetime, not a generation. One afternoon, one phone call, one meal. Write 20 lines about what happened. Then cut it in half. What remains is usually close to what the poem needed. I once spent three hours on a poem about my childhood home and ended up deleting almost everything. The only thing that survived was a single image of rain hitting the kitchen window while my father stood at the sink. That was enough. It still is.
Resources if you need more
If you want to study how other writers handle family, look at Carol Ann Duffy's poems about her sister, or Pablo Neruda's "Odas" where he writes about ordinary domestic things. You can find their work online. Most libraries have collections too. Read the ones that make you uncomfortable. That's usually the good stuff. There is no formula for a good poema sobre a familia. There are just honest observations and the discipline to cut away everything that isn't necessary. Start with what you know. Not what you think you should feel. That makes all the difference.
